Heckler & Koch made waves in the firearms industry last year by releasing the VP9, a polymer-framed 9mm that marked the company’s first striker-fired pistol in decades.
And, in typical HK fashion, the gun came packed with innovative features, including interchangeable backstraps, a striker status indicator at the rear of the slide, front and rear cocking serrations, a Picatinny rail for accessories, a crisp trigger, an ergonomic grip frame reminiscent of the P30 series, completely ambidextrous controls and tabs at the rear of the slide that help with cocking and locking the slide back.
Well, as you can imagine, the VP9 was very successful, so for 2016, HK has announced the VP40, the .40-caliber brother of the popular 9mm.
The VP40 has all of the hallmark features of the VP9 — including a cold-hammer-forged barrel, the enhanced “light pull” trigger, ambidextrous controls and a proprietary captive recoil spring to reduce felt recoil — but with a slightly thicker stainless steel slide and a 13-round magazine instead of the VP9’s 15-round magazine. Ten-round magazines are also available for shooters.
